Beached whale dies in St. Johns County

Gervais whale weighed approximately 600-700 lbs.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A whale beached itself and passed away on South Crescent Beach Friday morning, according to wildlife officials.

The whale was estimated to be 600-700 lbs. and 11.5 feet long.

It died after about an hour on the beach.

It was a juvenile female gervais whale.  This particular type of whale is typically found off the eastern coast of the United States, Ireland, the Canary Islands and western Africa.  The species typically strands itself on beaches.

Florida Fish and Wildlife arrived at South Crescent Beach on Friday.  It's standard procedure for wildlife officials to perform a necropsy on beached whales.
