Big-ticket items spark interest at JSO auction

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Expensive jewelry, trailers and even a Lamborghini have been seized and sold at Jacksonville Sheriff's Office auctions.

But a few big-ticket items at Thursday's auction drew dozens of first-time hopefuls.

Along with cars lined up downtown for inspection by potential bidders, four personal watercraft were up for grabs, including a Sea-Doo RXT and a Honda Aquatrax.

"It's sparking a lot of people's interest," bidder Carrol Franklin said. "You're seeing a lot of people looking at the Jet Skis."

Three of the personal watercraft were seized during drug investigations, and a fourth was evidence in a contraband case.

JSO said the money raised through the auction will be put to good use.

"It goes into a special law enforcement trust fund," JSO spokesman Christian Hancock said. "We can use it for training, for equipment. It can't be used for the hiring of new officers, unfortunately. But also we are mandated to give 15 percent to local charities. JSO typically gives more than that."

JSO usually holds the auctions a couple of times a year. But the experience was a new one for A.J. Duce, who hoped to snag a vehicle on the cheap and brought Franklin along to help out.

Franklin said the chances of Duce winning a bid were pretty good.

"If he keeps raising his hand, he will," Franklin said.

It turns out that Duce's bidding skills were not too shabby. He walked away with a new vehicle.
