Bill would boost computer coding in schools

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A state senator who is a former Yahoo executive proposed a measure Thursday that would require high schools to offer computer-coding courses -- and would allow students to use the courses for foreign-language credits.

The bill (SB 468), filed by Sen. Jeremy Ring, D-Margate, would require district school boards by Jan. 1, 2017, to submit plans to the state for computer-coding curriculums.

The bill, which will be considered during the 2016 legislative session, would allow students to satisfy two credits of foreign-language instruction by earning two credits in computer-coding courses and achieving related industry certification.
