PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -

A boil water notice has been issued to 500 homes in St. Johns County after a water main break Monday night, according to the St. Johns County Utility Department.

The break happened near the intersection of Sawgrass Drive East and Preston Drive East in Ponte Vedra Beach. Five-hundred homes in the area were without water for hours. It's unclear what caused the water main break.

The water was expected to be turned back on around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. A boil water advisory may last two to three days until lab tests show that the water is safe to drink.

The St. Johns County Utility Department has made automated phone calls to residents affected by the water main break.

The areas affected include the condominiums of: Rough Creek Villas, Section E 9749-9797, Quail Point 1 and 2, Sawgrass Racquet Club, Windemere, Hallmark, Surf Villas and Beach Club Villas.

Roads include: Tifton Cove Road North and South, Deer Run Drive, Deer Run Lane, Deer Run Drive South, Ponte Vedra Boulevard even numbers 894-1106, Ponte Vedra Boulevard odd numbers 1109-891, Isle Way Drive, Monte Diego Drive, Spinnakers Reach Drive, Summer Place, and Ocean Ridge Court. Areas may be added as the repairs unfold.

Signs will be posted at the entrance of the subdivisions affected by the notice. Under the notice, all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth or washing dishes should be boiled first. A rolling boil of one minute is sufficient. As an alternative bottled water may be used.

Residents may call the St. Johns County Boil Water Notice Hotline at 904-209-2731 for updated information or visit its website at www.sjcutility.us.

Retraction signs will also be posted once the notice is rescinded.
