Boy accused of holding teacher hostage appears in court

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 12-year-old boy accused of briefly holding his teacher hostage with scissors Wednesday made his first appearance in court Friday.

The Normandy Village Elementary School student is charged with kidnapping, possession of a weapon on school property and aggravated assault on a school employee.

The boy appeared in court with his mother.

Judge David Gooding ordered the boy not to return to the school. The decision to expel him will not be made until after all legal proceedings are complete.

Gooding did take into account that the boy has no previous criminal history and has not attended any diversionary programs.

The boy's mom told Gooding her son has been having problems learning at the school. She said she was in the process of pulling him out and exploring other educational options.

The boy's mom said her son is being seen by a psychiatrist. She said he is on medication but failed to take it before Wednesday's incident.

The boy was allowed to go home. His next court date is Nov. 17.
