Political Experience:

What do you see as the top three issues in this race?

  • Legal Experience
As far as issues are concerned, the County Attorney does not vote on policy issues, but only gives legal advice to the Board of County Commissioners. I have practiced law in Columbia County for over forty-two (42) years, and I have practiced as a trial lawyer in commercial, personal injury, environmental, real estate, and probate and trust cases. This has involved work in the State Courts, Federal Courts and the Administrative Courts of Florida. I have also handled commercial transactions, drafted and negotiated contracts and advised businesses. In the public arena, I have represented the Baker County Hospital Authority, and handled matters in litigation for the Suwannee River Water Management District.
  • Legal Achievements
I am the only candidate in the race that has an AV Preeminent rating by Martindale Hubbell, and have had such a rating for over thirty (30) years. I have served the legal profession as a member of the Board of Governors of the Florida Bar from 1994-2000, and was recently sworn in, again, as a Governor in June of 2014. I have also served on the following Florida Bar Committees: Civil Trial Certification Committee; Civil Procedure Rules Committee; Code & Rules of Evidence Committee; Student Education and Admissions Committee; and Chair of the Third Judicial Circuit Grievance Committee. I have also been a Board-Certified Civil Trial Lawyer since 1983, and a Certified Circuit Civil Mediator since 1991.
  • Life's Experiences
Not only am I an experienced lawyer, but I have a long history of service to our community, and it is my desire to bring this institutional memory and knowledge to serving Columbia County. I learned the importance of service when in the United States Marine Corps. I served in Okinawa and Vietnam, earning a Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V. Upon the completion of my active duty service, I continued serving as a Captain in the reserves while attending law school as an Amtrac Unit Commander with Bravo Company, 4th Amtrac Battalion. It has been my pleasure to have served as President of the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce with an additional seven (7) combined years of service on the organization's Board of Directors. I have served as the March of Dimes Chairman and the Professional Committee of the United Way. I am currently a member of: Kiwanis; Military Officers Association of America; American Legion; Elks Lodge; Fort White Gun Club; Gator Skeet and Trap Club; National Rifle Association, Life Member; and VFW, Friends of the Library, Art League, Ichetucknee Alliance, Also, I am an active member of St. James Church and have served the congregation as: Senior Warden, Vestryman, Lector, Lay Eucharistic Minister; and Building Committee, Chair.
The office of Columbia County's Attorney is to provide expert legal advice to Columbia County. This advice should be given and measured against knowledge of our community.  Like Judicial candidates, politics should play no role.  I view this office as a continuation of service to Columbia County, not as a political stepping stone.

  • Why should people vote for you?

I view serving the people of Columbia County as their Attorney as a continuation of my lifetime of service to the community.  Whether it be my service in the military, my service to my family, my service to the legal profession, or my service to our community, I believe I have a lifetime of experience that will allow me to serve Columbia County well.

What do you hope to be remembered for after you leave office?

I would like to be remembered as a Columbia County Attorney who served Columbia County well - bringing experience while performing the job as a gentleman.
