Bystanders, deputy rescue toddler from busy street

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – A toddler who wandered into a busy Palm Coast intersection after following the family dog out of her home was rescued Saturday by bystanders and a Flagler Sheriff's deputy.

A bystander told Deputy James Miley that she saw the 2-year-old follow a dog across the southbound lanes of Belle Terry Parkway and onto the median and quickly stopped the girl from going into the roadway.

Miley arrived on scene after calls about a child in the roadway at Belle Terre Parkway and Braddock Lane. Miley took the child, who was only wearing a t-shirt and a diaper, from the bystander and took care of her until her mother was found.

The girl's mother was found at her home on Bradmore Lane and reunited with the toddler, who was unharmed.

The mother said she had fallen asleep and when she went to check on her children, whom she thought were watching television, she realized her 2-year-old daughter was missing.

The front door was found ajar and the family dog was also missing.

"I commend the quick actions of the bystanders who saw this little girl in need of help and Deputy Miley for caring for her until her mother was located," said Sheriff James L. Manfre.

The Department of Children and Families was notified of the incident.
