Camp brings children from 12 countries together

Program allows kids to live together, share lives with one another

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It's one of the largest gatherings of international representatives in the city this summer: One camp is bringing children from 12 different countries together for one common goal.

The international camp is called "Village," put on by CISV Jacksonville. It had its opening day to the public at a local middle school, where 15 countries were represented Friday night.

The four-week program allows 11-year-olds from 12 countries to learn to live together and share their lives with one another.

The camp staff said it's a good way for kids to make friends from around the world.

"Usually two girls and two boys, and they come to this camp together and they make peace with each other," Lizzy Utset said. "They learn about each other's cultures and they become friends, and they realize that they are more alike than different from each other."

CISV International was founded more than 50 years ago and has more than 60,000 members worldwide.

CISV Jacksonville said the goal of the camp is to help kids learn how to resolve conflicts and become active, global citizens.
