JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A Leesburg woman is now in jail after being accused of chasing down seniors and feeding them lies. Leesburg police said the suspect would insist that the elderly driver hit her car and must pay for the damages.
Local 6 talked to a woman who said she was a victim of 21-year-old Alexis Deshai Carter's scam. Carter was arrested Tuesday on charges of scheming and defrauding elderly people.
The victim, who doesn't want to be identified, said she was leaving the Aldi's parking lot off 441 and 27 in Leesburg and was followed home by Carter. "I got out of the car and she was standing there and it wasn't anyone I knew. She said, 'you bumped me when you were leaving the parking lot at Aldi's,' and I said, 'No, I didn't bump you,'" the woman said.
Police said Carter then threatened the elderly woman, saying that her husband was a police officer and she could have her charged with a hit-and-run. The woman said Carter also told her that her mechanic didn't take checks, but would take Wal-Mart gift cards and that she needed nearly $200 to repair the damages.
Even though the damages weren't caused by the elderly woman, she said she was handed over the money. Police said she wasn't the only one who was scammed by Carter.
Two other people came forward with the same story of their run-in with Carter, police said, and police believe there are more victims out there. "Even if they were approached but they didn't go through with giving the money to her, we still want to hear from those people," Capt. Rob Hicks, with the Leesburg Police Department, said Tuesday.
Police said if you ever think you are the target of a scam, you should call them.
This woman learned the hard way, but it's a mistake she will never forget. "I prayed that night. I prayed she (Carter) would come back and give me my money back. She'll see the light, but that didn't happen," the victim said.
If you think you've had any run-ins with Carter, you should contact the Leesburg Police Department.
