FDOT inspects I-295 damage after crash

2 of 3 lanes blocked by emergency vehicles

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Highway officials have finished the first stage of road cleanup after a car carrier overturned on I-295 southbound Monday afternoon.

The accident happened just before the Dunn Avenue interchange, where the tractor-trailer overturned as it was carrying brand-new Volvos.

Traffic was backed up for hours while responding emergency vehicles blocked two travel lanes. The on ramp from westbound Dunn to I-295 south was also blocked.

It took officials several hours to turn the tractor-trailer right-side up. Each car had to be taken out one by one because the load was so heavy.

Although the driver of the tractor-trailer and the second vehicle involved in the crash suffered only minor injuries, investigators are still trying to piece together what exactly caused the crash, because, they said, both drivers are providing conflicting stories.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to a 50-gallon spill of diesel fuel along with the Florida Department of Transportation to inspect damage to the concrete on the overpass.
