TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida lawmakers want to make it easier for sexual assault victims to put their attackers behind bars.
A proposed bill would allow courts to use secret recordings made by victims of their attackers during trials. Last year, the state's Supreme Court ordered a new trial for a Lee County man after ruling secret recordings made by his sexually abused stepdaughter should not have been used in court.
"I think that we should give the victims of sexual violence every possible tool to be able to fight against their attackers, and this is a great proposal, and I look forward to seeing it through the legislative process," Rep. Matt Gaetz said.
In most cases, it's against the law to record conversations in Florida without the other party's consent.
