Classmates, faculty rally to make dream come true

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Superheroes tend to have a charm about them that draws people in. Luke Bond, the boy they've nicknamed Super Luke, is only 4 years old, and has the smile and energy to capture the heart of an entire community.

He also has leukemia.

Every superhero needs a sidekick, so Thursday, the students and faculty at Patriot Oaks Academy teamed up with Dreams Come True to give Luke a special surprise: The whole school became an entire team of sidekicks for the little Man of Steel.

"The school got with me on Thursday of last week and said, 'We had kids that went and raised money for Luke,' so I came down to see about Luke and his fundraiser," said Kate Wirz, of Dreams Come True.

The students and faculty at the school collected more then $2,000 so Luke can have a dream trip to Disney World this fall.

Erin Wagner and Samantha Byrd started the fundraiser after asking their teachers if they could have what they called, "Wednesday with a Cause."

"At first our friends and I wanted to have a dress up day for fun, and then we decided if you wanted to participate you would have to donate money to Super Luke, and his family so he could go to Disney," said Erin.

In addition to donating, the school also made Luke Strong bracelets that students could purchase.

"Everyone had to donate a dollar to dress wacky, and everyone donated way more," said Kelly Vaughn, their teacher.

In addition to donating, they made Luke Strong bracelets that students could purchase.

"My reaction when we found out how much donations we got, I was surprised, because I only thought we were going to get like $200 or $300," Erin said. "I'm guessing my family was definitely surprised by what we did. They were happy and our friends were so excited for us and I was just excited to share that experience with all of them."

"It's important to help people, because it makes you feel better about yourself helping out more people and thinking about other people instead of yourself," Samantha said.

Luke's parents say it means the world to them to have so much support from the community.

"This little guy is amazing," Luke's father, Steven Bond, said. "You wouldn't know he was fighting leukemia because, you know, he's still a loving, caring kid. He's still having fun. He takes his medicine like a big boy. He swallows pills that daddy can't even swallow; does it on a daily basis. I guess the main thing is, daddy is supposed to be teaching him about life, but he's teaching daddy. And so he's truly special."
