Clay School Board to discuss superintendent
The Clay County School Board will hold a special meeting Wednesday at Fleming Island High School to consider possible legal action to stop Superintendent Charlie Van Zant from spending money without authorization.
The School Board voted unanimously to stop county funds from being spent on a Dare to Think conference scheduled for Nov. 4-5.
According to the group's materials, the conference focuses on "how American exceptionalism and pride in America’s heritage of liberty are being returned to the classroom."
"This conference is a private, partisan political event and it should not be funded by taxpayer monies," said board member Janice Kerekes. "The superintendent continues to treat the School Board budget as if it were his own personal checkbook."
Kerekes said the board must determine if any violations of state or federal laws occurred or if any ethics violations have taken place in Van Zant's role in scheduling and allocating funds to the conference.
"Our resources and efforts must concentrate on the business of our schools and focus once again on our children," she wrote in a release.
