Coast Guard rescues sick crew at sea

19 crew members rescued after getting food poisoning at sea

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Coast Guard crews stationed in Clearwater were sent to rescue 19 crew members aboard a cargo ship that were sickened by food poisoning off the coast of Cape Canaveral on Tuesday.

The captain of the 584-foot South Korean-flagged cargo ship JS Comet, which is anchored three miles off the coast of Cape Canaveral, called Tuesday morning seeking help for 19 of the 21 crew members on board, according to a Coast Guard news release.

The Coast Guard sent aircrews and medical personnel to transport the ill crew members to be treated for their symptoms.

The Coast Guard will bring in a replacement crew to man the ship until the ill crew members can go back to work.

The rescue occurred as Arthur traveled up Florida's east coast.
