Coast Guard rescues sick cruise passenger

71-year-old patient safely brought to shore

MAYPORT, Fla. – A Mayport-based U.S. Coast Guard boat crew rescued a sick cruise ship passenger Friday.

According to the Coast Guard, the cruise ship Carnival Fantasy requested a medical evacuation for a 71-year-old man who was suffering symptoms of a heart attack.

In video of the rescue, the Coast Guard crew pulled up to the side of the ship, a ladder was sent out from a hatch on the cruise ship so crews could safely transfer the passenger aboard the U.S.C.G. boat. With rescuers was a nurse and a family member of the sick passenger.

When the boat crew got to shore, the Coast Guard says the patient was transferred to EMS for further evaluation.
