Columbia County schools to function as normal on 9/11

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – Columbia County School District officials said schools will be open and function as normal on Friday in response to social media posts telling people not to let their children go to school.

According to the school district, the posts urged parents to not let their children participate in community activities on Sept. 11, the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office and local police departments said that even thought the Department of Homeland Security has not raised the threat level for the country, and there's no evidence of increased security locally, they will work together to make sure the schools and community are safe.

"Sept. 11 will never be just another day for Americans," the school district said in a statement. "But together, we can make it a safe day to remember the thousands of lives lost as a result of terrorism against our country."

The district asks that any suspicious activity be reported to school principals or the district office.
