Columbia County Sheriff gets 2 new K-9s

Canines Bak and Rek are the newest members of the K-9 unit

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – Friday morning was an exciting day at the Columbia County Sheriff's Office as deputies welcomed two new K-9s into their fold.

The dogs, Bak and Rek, were welcomed at a ceremony attended by friends, family and Sheriff's Office personnel.

During nearly six months of intense training, the canines learned obedience, detention, tracking and apprehension.

The dogs were certified on Feb. 17, but not released until the ceremony Friday.

Canine Bak is teamed with Deputy Brian Lucas and Canine Rek is teamed with Deputy Archie Crews.

"The K-9 teams are a tremendous asset for the Sheriff's Office," Sheriff Mark Hunter said in a news release. "Ultimately, having a successful K-9 program increases safety for our deputies and citizens of our community."
