County commissioner doesn't know why clinics being investigated

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A St. Johns County commissioner who's a part-owner of two Medi M.D. clinics that were raided last week said he doesn't know why he's under investigation.

The Attorney General's Office's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit served search warrants last Thursday at Bill McClure's facilities, one on South Plantation Island Drive and one on Palencia Village Drive.

The clinics are only taking calls right now and rescheduling appointments.

"I really was shocked. I really had no idea it was coming -- just shocked," McClure said. "I don't have any idea. I really don't have any idea, but I welcome it and will cooperate fully."

The Attorney General's office hasn't said anything about what specifically led to the investigation or whether any charges will be filed.

Items removed from the clinics include Medicaid and Medicare claim forms, billing records, prescription medications, medical records, financial records, computers and software and hardware.

"If they want to look at my books and records, they're more than happy to do that, and I have no problem with that," McClure said.

He said social media postings speculate that Medi M.D. is a pill mill. McClure said that's not the case, and that they see patients primarily for colds, depression, marriage counseling and anxiety.

"I'm going to stand out in front of this," McClure said. "I'm not going to hide."

The County Commissioners Office issued a statement saying it didn't know anything about this investigation.

McClure said the clinics are referring people who need pills to the emergency room. He said he hopes to be back up and running fully by next week, but he'll have to wait until authorities allow him to open back up.
