Community health initiative

Event hopes to overcome disaparities in health, locally

Jacksonville, Fla. – A health initiative called Northside LOVE -- Lifting Our Various Enterprises -- is putting an emphasis on loving the Northside community and spotlighting health disparities. The goal is to get people enrolled in health plans and to encourage people to become healthier.

Event organizers Leandrew Mills, Dr. Royce McGowan, and Akeelah Ammons stopped by Channel 4 to speak about the event.

Health screenings will take place at the upcoming event.  Booster seats will be given away for kids between the ages of 6 and ten, and a health fair will take place as well.

People will also learn how to cook healthy foods.

Akeelah Ammons, a YMCA nutritionist, showed us how to make chicken tortilla soup, which will be made at the fair.

If you want to participate in the community health initiative, it is next Saturday, March 1st, at Tiger Academy on Bagley Road.  It will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  For more information, you can go to northsidelove.com.
