Gianna Asencio was laid to rest at Jacksonville National Cemetery

FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – It was an emotional day Wednesday as friends and family came out to say their final farewells to Gianna Asencio.

The 14-year-old Fleming Island High School freshman was struck by a car and killed on the way to school about a week ago.

Her father is in the Navy and Gianna was laid to rest in Jacksonville National Cemetery after a tear-filled service at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fleming Island.

"She was just an overall sweet girl," Jade Revels said. "It's just like the day that I met her, I knew that me and her would be close. She was just so sweet. She was nice to everybody. She's just an overall nice girl."

Revels said she didn't even go to school with Gianna -- but grew to love her.

Classmates at Fleming Island High said Gianna recently moved to the area from New York.
People said the one thing they'll remember most about Gianna is her smile.

"When you first see this girl, the first thing you notice is her smile and how she just lights up the room with everything she says," Marcus Murphy said. "She's just a very funny girl."

Troopers said Gianna was trying to cross Eagle Harbor Parkway near Woodlake Drive when she was hit by a car. She was in the crosswalk but tried to cross in between two cars. She died at the scene.

"We just know that Gianna is going to watch over everybody," Revels said. " That's what she did. She wanted to make sure everybody was OK. She put everybody else before herself, and she's still gonna do that to this day."

Now that Gianna's gone, Revels said she will be remembered as an angel.

Gianna's father told News4Jax earlier this week that he's calling for increased safety measures at bus stops in the area, particularly the one where his daughter lost her life.
