Work begins next week to construct noise walls along the second phase of the Florida Department of Transportation's State Road 9B project from Interstate 95 to U.S. 1.
Noise walls are built to reduce the amount of noise reaching residents and properties near major roadways. Construction of the walls is expected to finish in late 2014.
This second phase of State Road 9B began in April with clearing land near U.S. 1, which continues along the three-mile section of new roadway. Construction activities since April have also included road work on U.S. 1, installing columns near U.S. 1 for a new overpass and resurfacing a section of I-95 in preparation for construction of the future interchange.
Superior Construction and Arcadis U.S. are designing and constructing this phase of State Road 9B at a cost of $95 million. The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2016.
The Florida Department of Transportation plans to open the first phase of State Road 9B, from U.S. 1 to the I-295 East Beltway, in late summer. This new roadway will help alleviate traffic congestion for motorists traveling between Duval and St. Johns counties. It has been under construction since 2010.
