Convicted felon arrested in burglary attempt

Gainesville police: Robert Lee Robinson, Jr. had handgun in his waistband

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A convicted felon was arrested in Gainesville after trying to break into a home and looking in windows in the area, according to the Gainesville Police Department.

Officers responded to a report of a suspicious man trying door handles at a home near NW 2nd Avenue and NW 17th Street.

An officer saw the suspect wearing a distinctive orange shirt described by the caller.

Officers said Robert Lee Robinson, Jr., 29, had a handgun (pictured) in his waistband and resisted arrest.

They said they took Robinson to the ground to handcuff him.

Robinson was on inmate release status for occupied residential burglary.

Gainesville police said there has been an increase in robberies around the University of Florida so they've stepped up patrols. They said this incident shows the importance of people keeping an eye on their neighborhoods and calling in suspicious information immediately.
