DOC: Adrian Hill falsified official records in attempt to justify actions

LAKE CITY, Fla. – A correctional officer has been charged with falsifying official records and battery on an inmate, officials with the Department of Corrections said.

Correctional Officer Adrian Hill surrendered Tuesday to authorities at the Colombia County Sheriff's Office following a criminal investigation by the Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General, authorities said.

The charges stem from an incident that happened July 23 at Lake City Correctional Facility, where Hill was formerly employed.

The administration at LCCF notified the DOC Inspector General's office of a possible excessive use of force by Hill, following a review of a reported use of force, authorities said. The Office of Inspector General initiated a criminal investigation after conducting a preliminary review of the incident.

Through the investigation, the Office of Inspector General determined that the use of force was excessive. Authorities said the investigation revealed that Hill committed a battery on an inmate and subsequently falsified official records in an attempt to justify his actions.

"The Department of Corrections has zero tolerance for those who misuse the responsibility inherent to their positions as stewards of our state's inmates," Secretary Julie Jones said. "I have full confidence in the Office of Inspector General's capabilities and their commitment to ensuring that those who jeopardize the safety of our inmates are brought to justice."

"Our agency thanks the DOC Inspector General's office for coordinating with local law enforcement on this important matter," said Department of Management Services Secretary Chad Poppell. "Our agency shares DOC's commitment to ensuring Florida's correctional facilities maintain a zero-tolerance policy for employees who abuse their positions and betray Florida's trust. We value our strong partnership with Secretary Jones and her agency."

Although an arrest has been made, an open and active criminal investigation into the incident remains, DOC officials said.
