Cost of eggs, other food increasing

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It's costing you even less to fill up at the pump. The average price for regular unleaded in Jacksonville is $2.23, according to AAA. Despite the price of gas going down, the prices of beef and eggs are increasing.

Economics experts say there is a lag in the prices you pay at the pump compared to the price for items you put in your refrigerator.

Experts say the new year will bring a rise in egg prices across the U.S. California is requiring farmers to house hens in cages so they have enough space to move around and stretch their wings. Experts say it's a move that could cost farmers millions.

A report from Iowa State University says a 15 percent increase in the cost of eggs means the cost of a dozen eggs could rise by 27 cents.

Also prices for beef could be even higher in 2015.
The USDA says that's because cattle inventories are at historic lows.
Beef prices are expected to rise 4.5 to 5.5 percent.  in 2015.
That means $10 in meat will now cost $10.55

"Farmers have to use more space to raise the chickens; that's raising the cost. In regards to meat there is increase in feed cost and demand for beef. That's the reason those prices are increasing," said Paul Mason, Acting Dean of the Coggin College of Business at UNF.

Despite the increase in prices of food items, most people are just glad prices at gas stations across the country are decreasing.

"It's definitely a benefit and it offsets some of the other higher prices we've had to experience the last few years," said Christopher Graham.

Mason believes oil prices will continue to fall. But that depends on what Saudi Arabia and the U.S. continues its increased production.
