Couple in DeLand bound by intruders posing as cops

Volusia County deputies search for 2 men who stole jewelry, cash

DeLAND, Fla. – A couple, including a man in his 80s, was tied up Thursday night by two men posing as police officers in a Volusia County home invasion.

The armed robbery happened around 9:10 p.m. on Lake Mamie Road near U.S. Highway 17 near DeLand.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, two men, one of whom had a gun, came to the door of the home and tricked the couple -- an 82-year-old man and his 63-year-old wife -- into thinking they were law enforcement officers.

"Somebody just come and knocked on our door," the woman told dispatchers. "I thought it was police officers."

When the wife opened the door, the men burst in and claimed they were looking for someone, deputies said.

"He made me lay on the floor, covered my legs took all my jewelry off took  my husband's jewelry off and took 8 or 9 hundred dollars out of my pocket," the woman told dispatchers.

The intruders bound the hands and feet of the man and woman then stole money and jewelry from the couple, including a ring that the husband was wearing and a necklace that the woman was wearing, according to deputies.

The intruders then ran from the home, said deputies.

The couple was not injured, but they're emotionally shaken, deputies said.

"For something to happen to them like this is real shocking to hear, especially in this neighborhood," said neighbor Shawn Hale.

A description of the assailants was not released, and an investigation is ongoing.
