Cousin pleads guilty to shooting at family gathering
Nathaniel Hayward, 42, pleaded guilty this week to attempted murder in the first degree and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
In April 2011, the victim, Hayward's cousin, was attending a family party when he was approached by Hayward. The two began to argue over a card game and Hayward then pulled out a gun and shot his cousin twice -- once in the head and once in the shoulder.
The victim's injuries caused severe trauma and partial paralysis.
Hayward has a felony conviction for possession of cocaine. He now faces a minimum mandatory 25 years and up to life in prison. He will be sentenced the week of Nov. 18.
