JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A pedestrian hit by a car Tuesday afternoon while crossing University Boulevard near Beney Road has died.
Jacksonville police on Thursday identified the victim as 26-year-old Suley Kamara. Investigators say Kamara was not in a crosswalk when he was hit by a car going south just before 4 p.m. The impact flipped him over the car.
Kamara was taken to UF Health Jacksonville, where he died.
The driver that struck the man stopped and was interviewed by police. It wasn't clear if he would face any charges.
"There's fatalities all over the city, especially Philips Highway in this area for pedestrians that don't utilize the crosswalk," Sgt. Randi Glossman said. "That's what we're trying to get them to do, because that would prevent things like this."
Both westbound lanes between Kennerly and Beney roads remained closed for more than two hours while police investigated the accident.
