Pedestrian killed crossing Beach Boulevard

Jacksonville police say victim was not in a marked crosswalk

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 44-year-old man died after he was hit by a car on Beach Boulevard late Sunday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said the crash happened around 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of Forest Boulevard.

Detectives said Brian Bowles was attempting to cross from the south side of Beach Boulevard and was struck by a white vehicle. Bowles, who lived on nearby Peach Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver is cooperating and there are no indications that alcohol was a factor.

The crash closed all lanes of Beach Boulevard for several hours overnight, but the road reopened just before 4 a.m.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office traffic homicide unit is investigating.

Detectives said they see a lot of crashes where pedestrians attempt to cross at intersections where they're not supposed to.

"A large percentage of them are pedestrians and or bicyclists attempting to cross in areas where they shouldn't or if they do use the crosswalk they'll try to do it against the light," said Detective J.D. Gregory. "They're just impatient just like drivers and when pedestrians and bicyclists do it though, unfortunately many times they pay with their life for those mistakes and that impatience."
