Woman, 67, hit by car, killed crossing road

Police: Woman was coming from grocery store

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 67-year-old woman was struck by a car and killed while crossing the street in San Jose on Wednesday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said Hanifa Mesic stepped out in front of a car driven by a 71-year-old man heading northbound on St. Augustine Road just south of Old Kings Road just before 10:30 a.m. Witnesses told police the driver was going the speed limit.

Police said surveillance video from nearby businesses confirms what witnesses told them. The video shows Mesic getting of a bus and crossing the road, waiting for cars to pass, then crossing. That's when she was hit.

Police believe Mesic (pictured below) was heading home from the grocery store because groceries were spread onto the road. Mesic lived at the San Jose Apartments, A Senior Living Community nearby.

She was taken to a hospital, where she died.

"I lost the best woman in this world," said Zixon Mesic, Hanifa Mesic's son. "Just an exceptionally nice person who was willing to help always anybody and everybody and wouldn't have hurt an ant on the ground.

"I just can't believe it happened. I just think it's a bad dream and I'm going to wake up."

"It is a sad day for us here at San Jose Apartments learning of the death of one of our residents," a spokeswoman for the complex said in a statement. "It is truly a tragedy. We are a close community and our hearts and prayers are with her and her family during this difficult time."

Police said no charges are expected to be filed.
