Crenshaw tours Naval Base San Diego

MAYPORT, Fla. – U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw, R-Fla., is touring Naval Base San Diego to get a feel for its operations and ship support.

Starting in 2016, the Navy will begin stationing Littoral Combat Ships at Naval Station Mayport, with six to arrive by 2020. That will mean 900 more sailors for the area.

The six Freedom-class ships that are coming are Little Rock (LCS 9), Sioux City (LCS 11), Wichita (LCS 13), Billings (LCS 15), Indianapolis (LCS 17) and LCS 19.

Naval Base San Diego is the West Coast base for these ships. Mayport will be the East Coast base.

The LCSs are versatile and able to deploy quickly.

A three-ship task force that moved to Mayport brought 2,000 sailors. The two decisions by the Navy to move those ships keeps Mayport an important base.
