Deputies warn of scam targeting elderly

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – St. Johns County deputies are warning residents of a scam targeting the elderly that involves flooring.

Deputies said a man described as a smooth-talking white man in his 60s greeted the victims as if they had known each other before and then attempted to sell the victims some type of flooring.

In one of the two incidents, a younger man arrived and the older man claimed the younger man was his grandson. The “grandson” entered the home with a roll of carpet.

In both cases, the victims declined the offer and the men left in a white four-door compact car, deputies said.

But after the men left the homes, the victims discovered they were missing property, including jewelry and a handgun.

Deputies said they believe the younger man entered the homes undetected and rummaged through rooms looking for valuables.

Deputies said the first incident occurred in the early afternoon at a residence on State Road 13 North, south of Roberts Road.

The second incident also occurred in the early afternoon at a residence on Eva Earl Road, west of Old County Road 210.

In both cases the victims are in their 70s, deputies said.

Anyone with any information concerning the suspects is asked to contact Detective B. Kukar at the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office at 904-824-8304.
