Child, 3 others shot at Eastside apartments

2-year-old girl taken to hospital in critical condition

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four people -- including a 2-year-old girl -- were shot Christmas night at a apartment complex one block from the Haines Street Expressway on the Eastside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said a 2-year-old girl was shot in the abdomen at the Oakland Terrace Apartments on Franklin Street, just off Jessie Street. Authorities said she is in surgery and is in critical condition.

JSO also says a 21-year-old man was shot in the leg, a 19-year-old was shot in the elbow, and a 17-year-old was shot in the arm and back. Their names and conditions were not reported Friday night.

"It is crazy," one resident said. "I've got a baby on the way and living in this neighborhood is making me think about moving out, and I've only been here for five months."

Saturday deputies were back at the complex continuing the investigation. JSO didn't release any new details but deputies were seen talking to neighbors.

Police have not said anything about the motive or if they have any suspects in the shootings.

A local organization, Mad Dads, is constantly working to prevent these violent acts, something that an activist says happens too often and this month has been the worst.

“As a community we have to stand together, we have to work with the police department to get these criminals off the street. JSO can’t do it by themselves, we are there before JSO arrives, so we can help JSO get these criminals off our streets,” said A.J. Jordan with Mad Dads.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
