Cyclist hit on Monument Road Tuesday dies

Victim's mother says six of his organs were donated to others

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The 20-year-old man hit by a car Tuesday night in the Regency area has died.

Police said Joshua Chitty (pictured, below) was riding a bike across Monument Road from the Regency Mall toward the Army-Navy Outdoors store about 9:45 p.m. when he was hit.

A 15-year-old boy was walking with Chitty was not hurt.

"A white Chevy Impala was going northbound on Monument Road and struck the bicyclist, the pedestrian did not get struck. The bicyclist was sent to UF Health with life-threatening injuries," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Detective D.B. Edmonds said that night.

Chitty's mother told Channel 4 that he was kept on life support until his organs could be harvested. She said his heart, lungs and four other organs were donated to give others the gift of life.

Officers have not released the name of the driver. Police say that no charges are expected in the case.
