Debby animals seek new home

200 cats, dogs washed in by Debby

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – About 200 cats and dogs washed into the Duval County animal shelter during Tropical Storm Debby are looking for new homes.

"We haven't had to euthanize a lot for space in the last year or so," said Scott Trebatoski with Animal Care and Protective Services. "The fear was having these hundreds of animals coming in and having to euthanize."

Last week, more than 240 animals were adopted, returned to their owners, or placed in rescue groups or foster homes after Channel 4's story about the animals washed in by Debby.

Starting Tuesday morning, a mandatory five day waiting period for animals washed in by Debby ends, and they can be adopted.

To find a home for the animals, the shelter is offering a deal on adoptions -- only county registration fees will need to be paid for.

"There are definitely some nice animals in there, some different breeds than we typically have because that flood displaced a wide variety of animals from a wide variety of areas," said Trebatoski.
