Dense fog slows traffic, shuts down JIA

Dense fog advisory in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Dense fog enveloped most of Northeast Florida early Thursday, causing traffic issues and prompting one flight cancellation and several delays at Jacksonville International Airport.

The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory Nassau, Duval, St. Johns and Flagler counties until 10 a.m. Tuesday.  A dense fog advisory means in certain areas, The National Weather Service estimates visibility to be a quarter of a mile or less.

A JIA spokeswoman said pilots need at least one-quarter mile of visibility to operate safely, it the shroud of fog was less than that for at least three hours. Ten arriving flights were delayed and 22 departing flights were held until the flog lifted.

Low visibility may cause dangerous driving conditions during your morning commute.  NWS urged motorists to slow down, use headlights and leave plenty of room between you and another vehicle while driving.
