Businesses across the U.S. participated Thursday in Freedom Day USA, a national Thank You Movement for the members of the military and their immediate families, along with veterans.
Going to the dentist, can be costly, so one Jacksonville dentist gave veterans free fillings, extractions, cleanings and more.
Family Dentistry off 103rd Street on the Westside decided to offer free dental work to veterans and their families.
"I was joking with the girls and I said, 'I heard everything was free,'" retired Marine William Thomas said. "So I came running back down and they laughed and said, 'Well, if you wait 'til Thursday, now being a retired Marine, you can come in,' and I said, 'You're not serious.' And they said, 'Oh yeah.' So here I am."
Thomas was a in the Marines for 20 years. He completed three tours in Vietnam.
Thomas would normally have to pay out of pocket for dental work, but on Thursday, he was thankful vets got services for free.
"Especially the Vietnam vets, we didn't come home to a very warm welcome," he said. "I think it's nice that people are showing their appreciation at this time. When we came back, we were spit on and everything else."
It wasn't just for veterans, but also their family members who sacrifice when their loved ones are on tour.
Veterans and their dependants saved hundreds of dollars on the dentist work they received. Some bills would have been close to $300.
"Veterans give so much for the country, so much for us, and as a dentist, I thought this is a little bit I can do," said Dr. Sudhir K. Agarwal, of Family Dentistry.
Free services were only available Thursday, but the dentist office plans to do it again next year.
