Deputies investigate ATV crash in St. Johns County

2 teenage girls hospitalized after 4-wheeler collides with SUV

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Two teenage girls were injured Friday night when the four-wheeler they were riding collided with an SUV, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

Skid marks and broken glass mark the spot where an ATV accident happened about 10:20 p.m. Friday, sending two St. Augustine teenagers to the hospital.

Neighbors said the driver of the SUV, who was not named in the report, was traveling down Jackson Boulevard and the girls on the ATV were traveling through Second Avenue when the SUV and ATV collided.

Those who know the driver of the SUV said she is devastated.

"Miss Debbie, she is one of the best people you'll ever meet," said neighbor Alex Harrill. "She's been here for more than 20 years. I guess she was coming home from work when this happened."

Other neighbors said it's not uncommon to see young people riding four-wheelers through the area. Their fear is that this crash won't be the last.

"I'm going to see if I can't talk to a couple of cop buddies of mine just to see if they can step up the patrol around here, not giving tickets or anything like that, just stay off the roads, you know?" said Harrill. "There aren't any woods for people to ride those things in. That's where they belong, in the woods. I just hope the girl will be all right, it's a terrible thing to happen."

Deputies said 17-year-old Ashley Dighton was airlifted to UF Health Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries and 17-year-old Shanna Devoe was transported by rescue unit to Flagler Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the SUV was not injured.

Detectives are continuing this investigation and charges are pending.
