Deputies: Man bitten by shark while body surfing

Two sharks are seen feeding in shallow water at Ponte Vedra Beach.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A shark bit a man while he was body surfing Wednesday in Ponte Vedra Beach, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said.

According to the incident report, Mark Wilson, 48, was with his wife at the beach when he was bitten in the ankle by a shark. Deputies said the shark might have been 4-foot black tip shark.

Wilson was bitten on the right ankle and was treated by paramedics at the scene. He was taken to Baptist Beaches Hospital in Jacksonville Beach.

He told deputies he was body surfing and noticed what appeared to be a fish flopping next to him. He said he felt pain in his ankle and realized he'd been bitten.
