Deputies: Woman tries, fails to rob gas station clerk

EAST PALATKA, Fla. – A woman attempted unsuccessfully to rob a gas station convenience store in East Palatka late Monday night, according to Putnam County Sheriff's Office deputies.

According to the clerk, the woman came in to the store about 11:40 p.m. with a
plastic bag over her head, with a large hole cut in it to see through. She also reportedly had a second plastic bag over her hand and claimed to have a gun inside, deputies said.

The woman ordered the clerk to give her all of the money in the register, deputies said.

During the short encounter, the clerk was able to activate the store's alarm, and the woman turned and walked out of the store. The clerk was uninjured. The woman was last seen fleeing the area on foot, deputies said.

K-9 Deputy Emmett Merritt was called to the scene and was able to follow the
woman's track for a distance. The track ended where the woman may have gotten into a vehicle. Two plastic bags were also recovered behind the store, deputies said.
