Douglas Anderson's top band performs in New York

NEW YORK – The top band at the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts -- the Wind Symphony -- was returning home Thursday from the Big Apple, where they spent the last few days participating in the New York International Music Festival.

The 47 young musicians, led by their director, Ted Shistle, performed a pops concert in Central Park on Monday afternoon.

On Wednesday afternoon, they were among six high school bands from across the nation that were invited to perform in one of the best-known performance spaces in the world: Carnegie Hall.

Their program included compositions by Aaron Copeland and Leonard Bernstein.

Videotaping of that concert was not allowed, but audience members said this band that regularly gets superior ratings in competitions "never sounded better." Asked what it felt like to perform on the famous stage, one of the young musicians described it as "powerful."
