Falling tree takes down power lines; Wilson Boulevard blocked for hours

JEA: 6,000 customers affected at one point

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The intersection of Wilson Boulevard and Old Middleburg Road has been shut down for several hours Thursday after a tree fell on a power line.

JEA says initial calls came in around 3:30 a.m. when a tree knocked out two circuits, knocking out power in the surrounding Westside neighborhood. Gerri Boyce with JEA says 6,000 customers were affected by the outage.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, along with three JEA crews worked overnight and by 5:25 a.m., they were able to get that number down to 2,400. By 6:10 a.m. only 15 customers were still without service.

JEA had hoped to have power fully restored by 7 a.m. Thursday, at 9 a.m. the crews were still blocking the street while working on the problem. As soon as utility crews cleared the area, police will reopen Wilson Boulevard.
