Suitcase on Skyway platform prompts evacuation

Police report suspicious package on Skyway platform at Rosa Parks station

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –  The Rosa Parks bus station between Union and State street downtown was evacuated for about two hours Wednesday morning until the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office bomb squad determined there was nothing dangerous about a small suitcase left on the platform of the Skyway.

The object was reported as suspicious just after 10 a.m. The Jacksonville Transportation Authority evacuated the Skyway station and the bus station below it, and police responded.

The suitcase turned out to be empty.

Traffic on both State and Union streets passing the bus station was diverted as a precaution. This included State Street in front of the Florida State College at Jacksonville's downtown campus.

The JTA rerouted buses to the corner of First and Pearl streets during the evacuation. The Skyway continued operating, but service was suspected north of the Hemming Plaza station until it was declared safe.
