Duval FCAT retake scores highest in years

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – FCAT retake scores recently released by the Florida Department of Education indicate that as compared to the last three years, Duval students retaking a failed FCAT reading exam this October reached their highest performance in FCAT retake success in grades 10 and 11, according to the school district.

"These results reflect our efforts to do everything we can to ensure all of our students achieve a passing score on FCAT or ACT/SAT exams, subsequently improving graduation status," said Superintendent Nikolai Vitti.

Tenth-grade students improved 7 percentage points, 11th-grade students improved 4 percentage points, and 12th-grade students improved 3 percentage points from last year. Additionally, Duval County Public Schools said it improved in ranking among the "Big Seven" in grades 10 and 12, and narrowed the gap between Duval and the state average.

  • 10th grade: Last year Duval ranked sixth (4 points behind the state); this year second (1 point behind the state).
  • 11th grade: Last year Duval ranked tied for seventh (5 points behind the state); this year seventh (4 points behind the state).
  • 12th grade: Last year Duval ranked tied for sixth (4 points behind the state); this year fourth (tied with the state average)

Students taking retakes are those who did not receive a passing score to graduate from high school. During the 2013-14 school year, the district addressed FCAT retake strategies in an effort to improve those outcomes. Officials said those efforts were led by Curriculum and Instruction staff and improved district leadership monitoring.
