Emotional vigil held at University of Central Florida

Students, staff gather to honor victims

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando community continued to mourn the loss of the 49 people killed at Pulse nightclub.

Students and staff at the University of Central Florida remembered and honored those victims at a vigil Tuesday evening.

Hundreds of people gathered inside the Student Union at UCF, where a range of emotions filled the room.

News4Jax spoke with students and others who attended the emotional vigil.

“We are all one person; one falls, it hits everybody. You don’t have to know these people to feel it in your heart," Andrew Figueroa said.

Some who did not know the victims directly stood behind those who needed support and love.

"We just wanted to bring hope to darkness and give people joy whether it be a shoulder to cry on," said Caroline Shaw, student at UCF student.

Speakers talked to their fellow classmates and neighbors about how the shooting has affected everyone not only in Orlando, but around the world.

“There are a lot of people here that were lost, there are a lot of families who need support and I want to be a part of that, I want to be there for those people,” Figueroa said.

The UCF community has banded together to support those affected by the shooting.

There will be blood drives on campus for the rest of the week along with collecting stuffed animals for the children of the victims.

Counseling is also available to UCF students, faculty and staff during this difficult time.

It was an emotional vigil, but members of the community feel it's one of hope that something good will come out of all the tragedy.
