CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – A former Clay County school employee has been arrested on grand theft and fraud charges after deputies said she stole thousands of dollars from the school where she worked.

Deputies said Julie Herringdine, 37, stole at least $57,000 from J.L. Wilkinson Elementary over a five-year period.

Herringdine, who had worked for the school district since November 2007, resigned last year as bookkeeper at the school after the investigation began in September.

Deputies said the school's assistant superintendent of Clay County schools notified the school that its checking account was overdrawn.

Investigators said school officials found errors and theft while looking into the books and accounts payable. They said paperwork showed Herringdine turned in and was paid refunds for money not owed to her. Investigators said the paperwork also had forged signatures.
