Eye Envy eyeglass store burglarized again

Alleged thief stole $3,000 worth of designer sunglasses

YULEE, Fla. – A Yulee business owner is on edge Tuesday after thousands of dollars' worth of merchandise was stolen right in front of his staff again.

It was all captured on surveillance video, and the owner said he's offering a reward to help police solve the case.

Michael Sharpe, the owner of Eye Envy in Yulee, has nothing good to say about one of his customers after an incident that was caught on camera Saturday. A man wearing a hat and sunglasses grabs pairs of expensive sunglasses and puts them in his pockets. He even pretends to try on the shades while already sporting a pair while stuffing his pockets.

"This guy was a professional, my staff members were 2 feet away from him, literally," Sharpe said.

The alleged thief walked around the store talking on his cellphone to keep employees away while he grabbed eight pairs of designer glasses worth about $3,000. Sharpe is hoping surveillance video will help someone come forward with information that will help put the suspected criminal behind bars.

"I will be happy to give that person, that gives information leading to an arrest, $500 in cash," Sharpe said.

This isn't the first time his store was targeted by thieves. Back in November two women came into the store and stole a pair of designer sunglasses.

Police were able to identify the women, and the expensive Gucci sunglasses were mailed back to the store with an anonymous note.

After the latest heist, Sharpe said he was initially angry with his staff until he watched the surveillance video himself.

"I was thinking, 'How in the world could you miss that?' Then I watched the video and saw what a professional this guy was, I can understand how that can happen. He was so smooth and he put them off guard so well and used those tactics like holding the cellphone up to his ear," Sharpe said.

Even with seven high-definition cameras and warning signs, Sharpe said his staff still needs to be more alert to make sure this doesn't happen again.

"We just need to be more vigilant about those kinds of things. If someone comes in with a hat on and sunglasses and they leave them on, there's something probably up with that," said Sharpe.

Anyone with information on the suspect or the robbery is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS, where information leading to an arrest is eligible for a cash reward.
