Apartment fire displaces Arlington family

No one injured in fire started from candles

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Red Cross is assisting a family after a fire destroyed many of their belongings and made their apartment unlivable.

Jacksonville Fire-Rescue said the fire started Wednesday night from candles the family was using because they were without electricity.

"Most of their contents are probably pretty well smoked up," said firefighter Neal White. "Some of them are totally destroyed."

Firefighters said there were two adults and two children living in the home. No one was hurt in the fire.

"They lost everything they have," said Lajena Brooker, whose son lived in the apartment. "Nothing. No clothes, no nothing. Red Cross tried to give them assistance as far as they could and somewhere to stay, which is really good because I'm not financially able. A few people here tried to give them assistance."
