Family fight leads to 2014 shooting conviction

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Friday afternoon, 43-year-old Riad Akel was found guilty of attempted murder in the second degree, armed trespassing and four counts of improper exhibition of a firearm, the state attorney's office said.

According to officials, in February 2014, Akel attended a party with his wife, three children and mother-in-law. When Akel and his wife took his mother-in-law home from the party the mother-in-law encouraged Akel's wife to come up to the house and talk to other family members who were inside the home.

Reports said that when Akel's wife went upstairs she got into a verbal altercation with another family member and came outside to the car where Akel and the three children were waiting.

After hearing what happened, Akel grabbed a gun, went into the home and started a fight with the family member who had prviously been arguing with Akel's wife, police said.

Police said that as the fight between Akel and the family member began to escalate, family members tried to get Akel to leave multiple times, which he finally did after shooting a victim in the stomach.

Akel now faces a mandatory minimum of 25 years in prison and could face as many as 30 years. He is expected to be sentenced the week of July 29.
