Family, friends remember teen killed in crash

Trevius Williams, 16, was hit and killed Sunday crossing Lem Turning Road

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Friends and family held a candlelight vigil Friday evening in honor of a 16-year-old struck and killed by a car last weekend on Northside.

Trevius Williams was killed Sunday night while trying to cross Lem Turner Road. The driver of the car involved in the crash took a photo of Williams' body and posted it to Twitter and the story gained national attention.

Friday night, loved ones wanted to focus on Williams' life by lighting candles, releasing balloons, and praying at the place where Williams was hit and killed.

Williams' mother, Connie Coles, said the vigil was all about honoring her youngest son.

"We just wanted to come back and show him that we love him, and his life was not taken in vain, and we're not going to let his memory die," Coles said.

Coles came together with a small group of friends and family to remember his life. But the pain and anger from what happened after his death was still raw.

"People are very upset, and they want to see justice, like, how dare he do that? and then, he's not even charged," said Coles.

Janet Gregory didn't know Williams but said she was heartbroken by the story of what happened.

"I just don't get why the individual tweeted a picture of his body and why the cops didn't do anything about it," Gregory said.

Gregory came to support the 16-year-old's family and said she's still grieving the loss of her husband four years ago.

"Grief is a long struggle and people tell me all the time, ‘You've got to get over it. You've got to keep on, go on.' It's not easy. Even with the anger over what that driver did," said Gregory.

Coles said at the end of the day, she just misses her son.

"He will live on in our hearts and souls," Coles said.

Williams' mother told News4Jax she's going to the state attorney's office on Monday to see what her options are. She said she wants to find out if she can personally press charges against that driver.

JSO told News4Jax this week the driver did nothing illegal when he took the picture. That photo was later taken down from the Twitter feed.
