Family members pack up home of Fla. mass slaying

Authorities wrap up investigation in Bell as family packs up items

BELL, Fla. – Law enforcement officials have wrapped up their investigation in Bell at the scene where a 51-year-old man killed his daughter and his six grandchildren before committing suicide, according to police.

Family members are now going inside and collecting everything to move the items out. Flowers have been left at the end of the driveway in a makeshift memorial for the seven murder victims that is likely to grow.

The victims' other grandfather was packing up things Saturday morning in the shed at the house to move items out. He didn't want to be interviewed, but told News4Jax the family is heartbroken over this tragedy.

He said packing up the shed brings back painful memories of when he had to do it when Don Spirit was sent to prison after a 2001 incident in which he accidentally shot and killed another of his children. He pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The grandfather told News4Jax his wife, Sarah Spirit's mother, is not doing well, but the support of the community helps.

Many came out to support the family Friday night at Bell High School's football game versus rival Trenton High, but the game couldn't hide the shock in the community.

"It's just disbelief. Everybody is just in shock," said one resident. "That's the main thing that I hear, 'Pray for Bell.' Everybody is just in complete shock."

A prayer vigil is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Bell Elementary School to honor the victims. The elementary school is where four of the six children killed went to school.
